Day-to-day routines of media platform use in the digital age: A structuration perspective

2020

Using Giddens's structuration theory, this study examines how the routinized use of traditional and new media platforms differently align with the structures of everyday life. We analyzed data from a quantitative diary study in Germany to find that new media platforms specifically affect societal structuration by blurring the lines between obligations and leisure time. The part played by routines in the use of new media platforms was less strongly connected to clock time compared to traditional media platforms. Consequently, the findings indicate both a vanishing potential for media platform use as a social zeitgeber and the relevance of rules as structuring elements.

Converging paths to Notes

1995

The nature of the information systems needed in a networked firm is not well known: nor is the process leading to particular solutions. Describes a small computer‐consulting company which works as a network of independent consultants, and analyses the slow and circuitous path from recognizing its IS/IT needs to its commitment to a particular solution as seven steps; using ideas of structuration theory as a focus. During the selection process, participants formed new interpretations of the firm, of technology, and of the appropriate process towards a feasible solution. New resources – both material and symbolic – were acquired to enable the search. Existing “norms” provided boundaries for th…

What does computer support for cooperative work mean? a structurational analysis of computer supported cooperative work

1992

Abstract Technical developments in electronic communication and computing coupled with new understanding of relationships between computers and work processes has given impetus to a significant amount of research in the area of Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW). Much of this work, however, lacks strong theoretical foundations, and there is no clear definition of CSCW, the major research questions of the field, or appropriate strategies for research. In this paper we suggest Giddens' theory of structuration as a conceptual foundation for CSCW research and propose a formal definition for CSCW. We conclude by discussing seven implications of the framework for future research into: (a)…

Theorising about barriers to open e-learning systems in public administrations

2018

Abstract Barriers to the general use of e-learning technology are known across various contexts. Despite increasing efforts to clarify the range of these barriers, few efforts have been made to advance the theorising about them and, thus, to answer why and how they unfold. This study is motivated to overcome this unaddressed problem and develops a process model based on adaptive structuration theory (AST) and the punctuated socio-technical change model (PSIC). It represents how barriers unfold between actors, technology, and organisational properties in public administrations. The PaSIC model provides a new perspective on how critical incidents drive the emergence and progress of barriers t…

Utilitarian Use of Social Media Services - A Study on Twitter

2018

This paper applies structuration theory (ST) and service dominant logic (SDL) as lenses to study different uses of information systems (IS). We argue that resources provided by IS may be combined and reproduced by appropriating them for different purposes than the design purposes of the IS. The study provides empirical data and analysis to showcase the use of resources for utilitarian purposes in the context of social media services (SMS). Through an analysis of sponsored tweets on Twitter, we show that users employ implicit and explicit resources for utilitarian outcomes. Our findings imply that users create their own service through appropriation of resources available in the social conte…
